What in a nutshell is Translanguaging?
A targeted approach in using a familiar language to teach/learn a target language
Where should translanguaging be used?
In a bilingual classroom where students are learning a target language that is effectively foreign to them.
Why should we use Translanguaging?
Due to the changing demographic of language users in Singapore. English is fast becoming our “mother-tongue” and not just our “first language”. Thus there is a need to leverage on this in order to ensure that the learning of our actual “mother tongue” language and other third languages take into account this changing landscape.
When should translanguaging be used?
When there is a need especially to ensure students’ participation and motivation is at the highest level.
Who should use translanguaging?
Teachers who themselves are trained in teaching the target language and the familiar language. If this is not possible, a teacher aid should be used to complement the familiar language with the target language.
How should translanguaging be used?
It should be used with clear objectives and for a targeted purpose e.g. to enhance students’ understanding of a particular concept, or for task-based language teaching.
